Long and Bergmeister Win at Long Beach – 2nd Straight Year
Patrick Long and Jörg Bergmeister teamed to take a spectacular victory at the Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach Saturday, after Long drove a blistering stint and raised himself from 3rd in class to 1st with two well-executed passes.  Bergmeister started the race in the #45 Flying Lizard Porsche 911 GT3 RSR, fought through intense traffic and handed the car off to Patrick in 4th.

Heavy traffic – a record 36 entries started the race on the tight, sinuous street course – was a major factor in every team’s race. During the race’s only round of pit stops, the two BMW M3s of Rahal Letterman Racing opted not to take fresh tires. Flying Lizard’s strategists showed extreme confidence in their over-the-wall mechanics, and their gamble paid off as Long beat the previously leading Falken Porsche and 2nd placed Risi Ferrari out of the pits, giving him fresh tires to chase down the now-leading BMW duo. Within two laps, Long had passed Joey Hand for 2nd position, and with 10 minutes left in the race, passed Tommy Milner for the lead.

The victory makes it five consecutive podium finishes for Patrick at Long Beach, and two straight wins. Bergmeister and Long are now tied for the GT championship lead with Jaime Melo and Gimmi Bruni of Risi Ferrari; Patrick and Jörg have now amassed 16 ALMS victories together.  The # 45 Porsche also won the Michelin Green X Challenge for the GT entry operating at the highest efficiency with the lowest environmental impact.

Patrick said, “Winning at Long Beach is just an unbelievable result. It’s always spectacular racing at my home track, where I’ve been coming since I was a kid. There’s just something about the energy and the vibe that make it such a special race. The second half of the race started with the Lizard boys absolutely nailing it in the pits – we left nothing on the table with that effort. We were able to overtake the Falken Porsche, the Risi Ferrari and the leading Corvette in the pits. From there, it was about getting past the BMWs, who were very quick on the straight but didn’t take tires in their pit stop.”

He continued, “In the end, I got past Joey Hand in traffic to get into 2nd, and had to make an aggressive move on Tommy Milner to take the lead. Then I was able to pull clear, and by the time the Corvette had got past Milner’s BMW, I was far enough down the track that he wasn’t able to catch me before the checkered flag. We’re excited to be tied for the championship now, and all in all, it was just a fantastic weekend. I’m looking forward to being at the LMS race at Spa in Belgium here in a couple of weeks, and then of course up to Laguna Seca for round 3 of the ALMS.”

Porsche Carrera Cup GB Porsche Experience TV

Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain In 2010, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB will again be one of the most important and prestigious race championships in Britain and will be a major support race to the MSA British Touring Car Championship.

The new season will be the eighth year of Carrera Cup in Britain, modelled on Porsche’s long-established world-wide Carrera Cup concept. Equal cars, close and exciting racing and first-class facilities for teams and drivers all add to the strength of the championship. The 911 GT3 Cup car, introduced for the start of the 2008 season, offers drivers a mighty 420bhp, a sequential gearbox and a superb chassis. It is a purpose-built thoroughbred racer.

The successful pro-am1 category ensures that the less-experienced and non-professional racers can compete for their own points and prize money within the overall championship. Meanwhile, the pro-am2 category caters for 2006 and 2007 model cars and offers series newcomers the chance to sample the Carrera Cup on a restricted budget. In total, the championship prize fund is almost £100,000.

At the end of the season, three road-going 911s will be presented as the overall champion, the pro-am1 champion and the winning team principal in the team championship will all win the use of a Porsche 911 road car for a year. Supporting the Carrera Cup GB will be an excellent TV package, with races covered in detail in a new series of ‘Motorsport UK’, which will be screened on ITV4 and ITV1.

In addition, a number of races will feature within the extended live ITV4 coverage of BTCC race days. In the grid in 2010 representing the Carrera Cup GB Scholarship will be Michael Meadows and Euan Hankey, who both £50,000 towards their Carrera Cup season in the annual Scholarship programme.…

Porsche – Carrera GT: Porsche Experience TV

Porsche April 12, 2010 Experience the epic power and performance of this iconic Porsche. Watch the awe-inspiring Carrera GT being put to the test at the Porsche Experience Centre at Silverstone as its raw performance and breathtaking dynamics are fully explored.

The Porsche Carrera GT (Project Code 980) is a mid-engined sports car that was manufactured by Porsche in Leipzig, Germany.

The Carrera GT is powered by a 5.7 litre V10 engine producing 612 DIN (605 SAE) horsepower (450 kW), whereas the original concept car featured a 5.5 litre version rated at 558 hp (416 kW). Porsche claims it will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 3.9 seconds and has a maximum speed of 330 km/h (205 mph), although road tests indicated that in reality the car can accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.5 seconds and 0-100 mph (160 km/h) in 6.8 seconds, while 0-125 mph (201 km/h) in 9.9 seconds.

The Carrera GT has a basic five colour paint scheme which includes Guards Red, Fayence Yellow, Basalt Black, GT Silver and Seal Grey. Custom colours were also available from the factory. A traditional six-speed manual transmission is the only available transmission. Attached to this gearbox is a beechwood gearknob which pays homage to the wooden gearknob used in the Porsche 917 Le Mans racers.

In its second year of production, a limited edition carbon fibre knob was also made available. The Carrera GT has large side inlets and air dams that help cool the large V10 engine framed by the carbon fibre rear bonnet. Fitted with Porsche’s latest Carbon fibre-reinforced Silicon Carbide (C/SiC) ceramic composite brake system, the 15-inch (380 mm) SGL Carbon disc brakes make an impressive appearance underneath the 19 inch front and 20 inch rear wheels.

Similar to other Porsche models, such as the 911, the GT includes an automated rear wing spoiler which deploys above 70 mph (110 km/h). The interior is fitted with soft leather. Bose audio system and navigation systems are available as options. In typical Porsche fashion, the ignition is to the left of the steering wheel.

This placement dates back to the early days of Le Mans racing when drivers were required to make a running start, hop into their cars, start them and begin the race. The placement of the ignition enabled the driver to start the car with his left hand and put it in gear with his right. Notable technology includes a pure carbon fiber monocoque and subframe, dry sump lubrication and inboard suspension.

The carbon fiber monocoque and subframe were produced and assembled by ATR Composites Group of Italy. The spoiler of the Carrera GT extends into the air when the car reaches about 70 miles (110 km) an hour and evens out the air flow, which causes less drag. The Carrera GT radiator is about five times the size of a 911 Turbo’s. Front and rear suspension consist of pushrod activated shock absorbers and dampers with front and rear anti-roll bars.
