1992 Porsche Schuppan 962CR – Prototype Chassis Number #1 on the Auction Block

The legendary Schuppen 962CR on offer is confirmed by the vendor to be the prototype chassis number one. Chassis number one, is arguably the purest of supercars and must be amongst to be the rarest of any road going supercar ever produced.

Paul Southgate loved life!  Paul was renowned for owning some of the world’s most important Porsches– from 935’s through to Kremer CK5‘s and CK’8’s along with his collection of various important Formula 1 cars. Paul sadly passed away in 2008. He was a well-liked, very down to earth self-made man. The Schuppan 962CR was a vehicle built and designed in the early 1990’s by the Legendary Australian racecar driver Vern Schuppan. The 962CR is based on the dominant Le Mans-winning Porsche 962 race car of which Schuppan raced and owned with his own team.

By 1989 many 962’s were around but Porsche made the decision to stop manufacturing the chassis.

The legend, Vern Schuppen thought there might be an opportunity to upgrade the aluminium tub to the ‘new’ carbon fibre material. The racing composite versions of the 962C raced at spa in 1989, Japan and Daytona and Le Mans in 1990/91 under the Team Schuppen banner.

The 962CR was a mid-engine,rear-wheel drive vehicle powering the car is a 3.3-litre Type-935 Flat-6 featuring twin KKK turbochargers that gave 600 hp.

This was mated to a five-speed manual transmission. This unit was borrowed nearly directly from the standard Porsche 962 unit used in the North American IMSA GT Championship with a slight decrease in displacement.

The car’s top speed is 230 mph with a 0–60 mph acceleration time of 3.5 seconds.

The chassis and body were built entirely by Schuppan, although it featured design elements from the 962 race car. Assembly took place at the VSL 60,000 ft² race and production facility in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England.

Funding was provided by Japanese investors who supported Schuppan’s race team that ran in the all Japan Sports Prototype Championship- ART Corporation.

At just over US$1.5 million new in the early 90’s , the Schuppan 962CR is among the most expensive new vehicles ever sold .

Rumours circulated for several years that the 962CR was sold new for US$2.5 million but this rumour was eventually dispelled by author and Porsche enthusiast Karl Ludvigsen who listed a price of ¥195 000 000.

By 1992 3prototype’s were built and the first production batch of 25 out of 50 cars were ready to roll. However before this could proceed, ART sport pulled the financial plug and their project ground to a holt. The timing was bad all round; the supercar market moved into decline, which drove the Art Sport decision -because the project faltered, the model could not be homologated for Le Mans.

This, coupled with the high cost of the car’s construction and a worldwide economic recession, forced Schuppan to declare bankruptcy, folding not only his car company but his race team as well.

The legendary Schuppen 962CR on offer is confirmed by the vendor to be the prototype chassis number one. It was purchased by the current vendor in 1999 indirectly through ART Corporation.

Confirmed and regarded internationally to be the car that featured in ‘The Story of Porsche’ and driven by Alain De Cadenet AS962CRP1 has featured in many magazines and Porsche books.

CRP1 has been the subject of much recent work- with various bills and receipts available in the car’s file. Bills include a £10,000 re-spray in 2004, and a thick file for mechanical work,where thousands had been spent from 2001 to 2006- too much work to list.

The engine- now a 3.3 turbo, was built by Julian Godfrey, and was mated to the correct type 962CR Porsche 962 gearbox, suspension and steering.

Chassis number one, is arguably the purest of supercars and must be amongst to be the rarest of any road going supercar ever produced.

UP FOR SALE: Porsche 962 Derek Bell Signature Edition a dream road-legal race car

One of the true petrolhead dreams: a road-legal race car.

Amazing road registered Porsche 962. Built at a cost of around U.S. $ 2 million this astonishingly quick road car is based around an aluminum monocoque with integral rollcage Fabcar. Believed to have been built for the Dyson Racing team in the USA IMSA who prepared and raced Porsche powered race cars.

There was a time where you could buy a sports racer of the peg drive it to the track, thrash the yambags off it and then drive it home, but as cars became more dedicated to the track, the ‘road’ part became an untenable dream.

Well, the car you see here wouldn’t have a hope of winning a proper FIA GT race, but boy you’d be the toast of any trackday you frequented.

Not to be confused with the Schuppan 962CR or Dauer 962, nor a home-brew conversion; this is chassis no. 00 of a planned (but aborted) run of road-legal Porsche 962‘s.

It was built at a cost of about $2 million and based around an aluminium Fabcar engineering  monocoque originally destined for the Dyson racing IMSA team in the USA, an outfit that raced Porsche-powered racing cars.

The standard 2.8 litre flat-6 race engine is totally unsuited for road use (and no doubt a bugger to start on a cold morning), so a more mundane twin turbo 993 GT2 engine with ‘only’ 580bhp and 547lb/ft of torque is fitted.

The legendary LeMans racer Derek Bell

gave his name to the car, but alas only the one was built.

In stock now is this amazing road registered Porsche 962. Built at a cost of around $2 Million USD this astonishingly quick road car is based around an aluminium Fabcar monocoque with integral rollcage believed to have been built for the Dyson Racing IMSA team in the USA who prepared and raced Porsche powered race cars. On top of this chassis is a full carbon fibre long tailed body.

Engine wise the standard 962 2.8 litre unit would be no good for road use so instead the car is fitted with a twin turbo 993 GT2 engine running 580 BHP and giving a colossal 741Nm of torque.

When the car weighs just 830kg that equates to around 700 BHP per tonne. To put this figure into perspective the iconic McLaren F1 is 550 BHP/tonne, a Carrera GT is 442, a Pagani Zonda C12S is 437 etc. For long distance endurance the car features a 120 litre fuel tank.

This power would be pointless if the car didn’t handle and stop well enough, to that end the car is fitted with top quality Koni adjustable suspension with hydraulic adjustable ride height (it will go up quite steep drives and speed bumps without issue). Stopping is taken care of by monster 350mm floating Brembo brakes with adjustable bias.

Interior wise the car has two leather bucket seats with Willans harnesses, it features aircon to keep the cockpit cool, parking sensors, an intercom system for driver and passenger comfort and electric mirrors. A removable steering wheel makes entry and egress from the vehicle much easier.

For track use the car features air jacks, a fire extinguisher and towing straps front and rear.

This has to be the ultimate fast road or track car which is as thrilling to drive as it is superb to look at.

The racing legend Derek Bell put his name to the car which was planned to be manufactured in greater numbers, the inside of the door shut bears a copy of his signature and the build number 00.
